Seth Rose was the one who verified the report of the death. Seth Rose, a Democratic representative who serves Columbia in the state legislature, was reportedly overcome with emotion upon receiving news of Newman’s passing on Tuesday evening.
Rose is also a distinguished attorney and former member of the Richland County Council, first crossed paths with Newman during their time as law students at the esteemed University of South Carolina.
Rose reported that he engaged in a telephone conversation with Newman at approximately 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
“The abrupt and unexpected demise of my good friend Brian DeQuincey Newman has left me in a state of tremendous sadness.”
Rose stated. “We met each other while we were both attending law school. We were colleagues at the Solicitor’s Office for the 5th Circuit during our time there. While we were both serving in public office, we were even able to represent some of the same neighborhoods in different capacities.
“He was more to me than just a close friend and a respected attorney. He was also someone I looked up to professionally. I shall miss him because, at his core, he was a nice person.
